The story of Linde began with the founding of Guldner-Motoren-GmbH on February 15, 1904 by Dr. Guldner Von Linde and Dr. Georg von Krauss. In 1929, the company was acquired by Linde AG and relocated its headquarters to Aschaffenburg, Germany. In 1938, Guldner added agricultural tractors to its product line. In 1955, Linde initiated the production of water-powered vehicles, introducing the first water-powered car in the city of Aschaffenburg. In 1977, Linde acquired the business of Baker Material Handling Corp., located in Cleveland, United States.

In 1984, Linde also acquired Fenwick Manutention SA the largest forklift manufacturer in France. Five years later following the acquisition Linde purchased the business of the UK based forklift manufacturer Lansing Bagnall. These acquisitions significantly contributed to Linde's substantial growth in the material handling industry. In 2006, Linde Material Handling became legally independent as part of the KION Group. KION is a leading player in the material handling industry in Europe, providing warehouse equipment, forklifts and industrial trucks. In 2007, the company set a record when it produced 50,000 forklifts.

Products designed for the American market are produced by Linde Lift Truck Corp. in Summerville, South Carolina.
