Toyota Forklift History
The global organization known by the name Toyota today started from humble beginnings as a local textile and spinning company. In 1918, Sakichi Toyoda, the founder of Toyota, established the company Toyoda, specializing in spinning and weaving with his automated technology. Sakichi transformed the textile industry in Japan. In 1937, Kiichiro Toyoda, the son of Sakichi, expanded the family business by investing in the automotive sector and establishing Toyota Motor Corp. Over the following years, the company diversified into other businesses such as Denso, Aichi Steel, and Toyota Tshusho.
Toyota and the Material Handling Equipment Market - In 1956, Toyota officially entered the automotive industry with a new forklift model powered by an engine. In 1958, it reached the global market. In 1965, the company began selling forklifts from Japan to Europe. In 1967, Toyota introduced the first electric-powered forklift. Production increased when Toyota decided to open a new, state-of-the-art factory, which became the largest in the world. The factory is located in Takahama, Japan, and was established in 1970. In 1971, the business was thriving, and the company sold more than 150,000 forklifts worldwide. By 1985, the total reached 500,000 units. A decade later, in 1995, forklift sales reached the impressive milestone of one million units globally.
The introduction of the first fuel cell-powered forklift (Fuel cell is a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy by introducing a chemical substance to undergo a reaction that generates an electric current) was announced by Toyota in the year 2000. Toyota declared its commitment to start manufacturing environmentally friendly vehicles and initiated the use of fuel cell-powered trucks for the first time. In 2007, in Chicago, a prototype vehicle was developed in collaboration with Toyota Industries Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. The prototype utilized hydrogen as the primary energy source. The prototype had zero carbon emissions and generated electricity without the need for combustion.
Hybrid Forklift - In 2009, Toyota Material Handling USA introduced the hybrid forklift, a new model utilizing technology developed by the Toyota group. The hybrid forklift combines an electric generator, an IC engine, and a battery to create an engine that can operate efficiently in terms of fuel consumption and appropriate pollutant emissions. This is achieved by seamlessly switching between the battery and engine modes and recharging the battery while in operation.
